Basic Piano Technique teaches you how to understand music and how to play the piano.
Once you learn how to read music, that is, learn to read the written score like you can read a book, you’ll be able to play whatever you want.
You’ve got two options:
1. Learn to play the piano by ear and play whatever you like.
2. Learn to read music and play whatever you like.
There are different levels of proficiency, obviously. You’re a beginner, so you’ll play at a beginner level. How quickly you move up the scale depends on seat time. How much time to you have to practice? How badly do you want to learn?
As an adult learner, you may be interested in learning to play the music you already know and love. So if contemporary music is your thing, or classical, or hymns, whatever it may be… once you learn to read music, you can play whatever you enjoy.
This website, along with my YouTube videos, will help you accomplish the skill of playing piano. Start creating a new musical life. It’s fun and rewarding.
Below, each “black key” links to a complete web page. The numbered keys should be viewed in order, as each page builds upon knowledge learned from the previous page.
Navigation Note: If you want to get back to this home page, click the round keyboard icon you’ll find at the top and bottom of every page. It’ll bring you back here.
Start by exploring the first black key below and learn a song without knowing any theory about music. The reason why the music works is the theory part, and that should come along after you’re properly inspired to continue.
